In 2010, I had the opportunity to spend time with a client in Northern California. While there I had one of my bikes shipped to a local bike shop so I could enjoy cycling in Santa Clara, San Jose, Mountain View, Los Altos and Palo Alto. Several of my clients were avid cyclists who invited me out for several rides. One ride in particular is how I came up with the name for my company.

The course was 50 miles and included a 10 mile climb up a mountain, yikes! As a flatlander from Dallas, even though I had great fitness from a several months of training, I was a bit concerned since we don’t have any climbs of this length in North Texas. I was excited about the ride, but definitely had trepidation (understatement) about this journey.

Before we left Santa Clara, I changed my rear cassette to provide me with the appropriate gearing needed so I could survive the ascent and more importantly, not get dropped lol.

The ride began, and I was feeling good as we approached the mountain. Initially, the climb didn’t feel that bad…for the first mile (lol); and, then just like that….it got harder! I made sure I sat on the wheel of the group ride’s leader, taking every advantage to stay in what little draft he provided. As we went up, and the climb was beginning to sting; lactic acid filling my legs, breathing becoming more labored; I decided to look up to see where we were going, and assess our approach to the summit.

This is how I came up with the name Clearview. I could clearly see the top of the mountain and the road ahead. I immediately thought my situation, in spite of being very uncomfortable, translated into how I would help my clients develop a roadmap and strategy for their success. Taking the time to understand their vision and where they wanted to take their business I could develop a clear view, and plan, of how to help them achieve their goals and objectives. The key was to develop a strategy that would help them get from their current state, like me at the bottom of the climb, to their desired state, like me reaching the summit (and not passing out or getting dropped before the top).

The ride was a blast and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Not only did I have a great time but I also came up with an appropriate name for my fledgeling marketing consulting company.

Moral of the story – Creating a brand message that clearly articulates what your company provides, the value you deliver, and why clients should trust and engage you is foundational to success.
